Our Academy programming of small in-person and virtual classes follows the COVID-19 health and safety guidelines with class sizes of limited capacity. In-Person Classes

Imagination Station
Thursday, 5-7 p.m.

Teacher: Daniel Hickie

In this intermediate theatre class, actors will tell dynamic, clear, exciting, interesting, character-filled, and imaginative stories. Actors will not only use performative skills to share stories with each other, but will be directly involved in creating those stories from the beginning. The aim of this class is to deepen a desire for telling stories.

Acting Up!
Sundays, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Come unlock your creative potential using improvisation, drama games, and scene work and discover the power of their imagination. Experience the fun and laughter that comes from simply expressing the world around you and turn the mundane into magic!

Through a mix of in-person rehearsals and online lessons, students will get to put together Super Happy Awesome News! A Virtual Musical, an incredibly fun show specifically designed to be rehearsed and performed remotely. Students will be dancing and acting together, with individual and group singing lessons online! 

Advanced Broadway Stars

Be a part of the advanced class’ first non-musical production! It’s PLAY time!!! We’ll end the session with a livestream of our show, live from one of the Segal Centre’s main venues.

This workshop-based course is designed to awaken the imagination, emotion, and intellect of the student actor by building awareness of the transformative power of theatre arts and Yiddish culture. Through various techniques including storytelling, rhythm and movement, mime, improvisation, and Yiddish language through music, students will be challenged to transform the "self" beyond pre-established boundaries.

The focus of this class is how to be more prepared for life as a professional actor. We will jump into the art of choosing, preparing, and performing monologues for your auditions. We’ll end the session with a livestream of our showcase, live from the Segal Centre’s main stage.

Playwriting 101
Sundays, 1-3 p.m.

Students will take turns sharing their original work and acting out the works of their peers. Come learn the basics of story, character, and setting, and explore all the different kinds of worlds one can create using these simple ingredients.

This exciting skill-building class will introduce new dance and acting techniques while developing musicality and voices through individual and group singing lessons, all online! With favourite games and activities, students will discover theatre creation and expression while furthering their triple threat skills!  

Dance with Debbie!

In this class, students will learn original choreography in various styles from Broadway to hip-hop. New techniques will be introduced and a short choreography will be learned each week. In the final four weeks, we will learn a full dance to perform either virtually or in person if safety allows!

In this online class, students will have the chance to live out their triple-threat dreams from home! Dancing, singing, acting, costumes, sets, and more will all be part of this incredibly fun show!

Let’s get together online and make a 30-minute movie musical. Beyond acting and performing, you will also be a part of the editing process, learning how to do some basic video and sound editing skills.

MAGIC!

Do you love magic? If so, this beginner's magic class will be a great way to start learning! We'll cover some basic card techniques and learn tricks using regular household objects. New tricks will be taught every week and a list of materials will be provided prior to each class.  

Musical Creation & Performance

Students will work together to create a mini-musical from concept to performance in just ten weeks! The class will cover everything from music and lyrics to production design. This gives each student the chance to shine onstage and behind the scenes.


Masterclass: ‘Build Your Book’

For advanced students to aspiring professionals who want to develop their repertoire of songs, cuts, and monologues. Students will perform prepared solo works and receive direction and instructional feedback in a masterclass-type setting. This course will include instruction on vocal technique, acting direction, physical characterization, and audition coaching preparation.
